Academic Writing in English. This course addresses the needs of graduate students to communicate in written English about their research and their learning. In other words, it helps them to participate in the international discourse of their discipline by increasing their familiarity with the conventions and norms that govern academic writing in English. These norms are both linguistic and rhetorical, and some are general to all academic writing in English while others are discipline specific. The underlying pedagogical assumptions are that students' writing improves as they a practice the craft of academic writing in a structured, supportive environment, b receive instructional feedback on the form of their language and expression, c begin to develop a critical perspective on their own written English, and finally d begin to develop a metalanguage that both reflects and supports this critical perspective while also making it possible to communicate more effectively about their own writing and that of their peers Learning outcomes and competences After having successfully completed this course, a participant will be able to: Describe and apply at least one model of a writing process suitable for composition of academic texts. Describe the conventions that govern the structure of a research paper to comment critically on whether, and if so how, her or his first-language conventions differ from Anglo-Saxon conventions. Describe and employ at least one vocabulary-enrichment strategy. Describe and employ critically at least four sentence-level revision strategies aimed at making writing more clear, coherent, concise and correct. Summarize in English a research paper relevant to her or his own research. The course will consist of lectures, seminars, and contact hours.
